How did your passion for travel get started?

When I was 17, I took my first trip abroad. That is the moment my life changed forever. I still remember that moment when I was standing in Florence, Italy thinking this is what life is all about. I didn’t know how I was going to do it, but I knew that this is what I want to do with the rest of my life; see the world and show everyone how to do it too.

What does travel mean to you? Why do you feel it’s important?

To me travel is the greatest education. I found out who I am exactly by exploring the world. Travel has given me life, it has pushed me to be a better me, it helped me figure out who I was. To explore cultures, meet new people, understand the world and those who live in it is what life is all about.

You’re a budget travel and lifestyle expert. How did you get to where you are today? What was the journey like?

I have backpacked around the world for $20 a day. I have also travelled the world with my boss at the time, Brad Goreski, staying at luxury accommodations. I wanted to find that middle ground. I wanted to make travel affordable to all. There is a way to still see the world and do everything you dreamed of without spending your savings.

You run a website called Get Lost with Lindsay. Can you please tell us a bit about it? How did it come about? What makes it unique?

I created Getlostwithlindsay because I was getting so many people saying to me that they live through my adventures. I don’t want that. I want people to get inspired to do the adventures for themselves. That is how it all got started. I decided I want to show everyone all the tricks and tips to start crossing off that bucket list today. Stop waiting, adventure and experiences are all around us!

Something you’re particularly passionate about is budget travel. What exactly is budget travel? What are some ways we can save money while traveling?

People don’t like the word budget. But I say, let’s make it cool! Why is it such a bad idea to be conscious of the money that we are spending? The way that I can keep going on adventures and traveling is because I take the extra steps to find the best deals. For example, instead of being married to one location, look around at the surrounding areas for the best deals. I needed to go to Ireland, but the flights were too expensive. But, I found a flight to Scotland that was very affordable, then I took a 30-minute flight from Scotland to Ireland for 9 euros. Yes, 9 euros! I always tell everyone that if Europe is where you want to go, then just get over there. Go to any city in Europe that is the most affordable and after that, the flights are super cheap from place to place. There are so many European budget airlines now. I also love taking the train. It’s a beautiful way to see the countryside. Be flexible with your travel plans. If you adjust the city a bit, or even just the day, it makes a huge difference. Never just look at one booking site. The other huge money saver for me is cooking. I always book accommodations that have kitchens. You can still cook with the local ingredients and enjoy their cuisine but in your own way. You will save a fortune not eating out 3 times a day.

You’ve lived in both New York and Venice Beach, California. What makes both of these places such great tourist destinations? What do you recommend people see and do when they visit them?

I moved to NYC when I was 23. It was boot camp for my life. It was a complete culture overload, but in a great way. I always tell people who come to NYC for the first time get out and get moving. Walking and exploring each corner of the neighborhoods are what it is all about. And go to all the burroughs. See a show, but you do not need to spend time in touristy Times Square when the show is over. Get lost in Central Park. There are still so many things I still haven’t seen there. Walk the highline park. Ride bikes over the Brooklyn bridge. Head to DUMBO to see the best view of the skyline. Eat dumplings in chinatown, street pizza in little italy, mofongo in the bronx, and Greek food in Queens. The great thing about NYC is just around every corner it’s like little versions of the world. There is just so much to see and experience there.

Venice Beach is completely opposite of NYC. I fell in love with it for its eccentric and quirky ways. Of course, most people who think of Venice think of the boardwalk and muscle beach. If you live in Venice, you never actually go there. Abbott Kinney is a street that is in the heart of Venice. It is full of designer stores, coffee shops, and top-chef restaurants. My favorite area is the Venice Canals. It was built by Abbott Kinney to replicate his love for Venice, Italy. It really feels like you have been transported. I could walk around there for hours. The sunsets are some of the best I have ever seen. Head to Venice Beach Ale house or The Waterfront for the best seats in the house to witness the beauty. Everyone in California is very active. People are just outside more and full of life. This of course is mostly due to the forever great weather. I take full advantage by biking everywhere. I love being able to bike the beach, bike to dinner, it’s the best way to explore.

How many days/weeks do you travel in any given year? What types of places do you like to visit?

Last year, I was on the road a lot. I went to over 10 countries, and traveling to the places the locals are travelling to is my mission. I want to go to where they are vacationing. For example, instead of going to the Amalfi coast like everyone else, I went to Ponza and Sardinia, where Italians go on vacation to escape. I like to explore places that aren’t as touristy.

What do you want audiences to gain and learn from your work?

I want to encourage and motivate everyone. I want people to start exploring and living life. Even if it’s close to home, get out of your comfort zone. When we travel and experience new things in life, it is proven we are happier people.

What are the top three destinations you’ve visited?

I got married this year in Ireland. I don’t think enough people go there. It is such a beautiful country, and very affordable. Rent a car and explore every inch of its amazing countryside.

Southern Spain has such a special place in my heart. I love it. I love Spain in general. But, there are so many great small towns that are budget-friendly. My favorite is a town called Vejer de la Frontera, which is set on a clifftop.

I just recently went to Joshua tree for the first time. It is an easy road trip and just nature at its best. We got this gorgeous ‘glamping’ tent and stared at the stars for hours. The park is beautiful and there are tons of hikes.

Give us your ‘Top 5’ list for one of your top 3 destinations. Like a mini-guide or a to-do list of sorts. It can be anything from your favorite hotel, the best place to have lunch, the best sightseeing, etc.

Ireland:

-Stay in Galway.

It is a small city on the west coast. It was also just named the top cultural city this year. It has it all: food, drinks, hotels, and live music on every corner.

-Visit the Guinness Storehouse

This might seem touristy, but you have to visit it while in Dublin. It’s a gorgeous beer museum. They even show you their clever advertising from over the years and all the secrets to their beer making. You end with a pint on the highest rooftop in Dublin overlooking the city. Did you know Guinness signed a 9,000 year lease? Let’s just say they aren’t going anywhere.

-Drive the Ring of Kerry.

You will spend a lot of time in the car. But, you forget all of that when it’s so beautiful. It’s a three-hour loop around the peninsula. It’s worth every second.

-Cliffs of Moher.

I am sure you have seen photos, even though the photos are gorgeous, it still doesn’t do it justice.

-Stay in a Castle.

I got married in a castle in Ireland and it was only $300 per night. You can actually search for castles on Airbnb. It’s something you need to experience once in your life. They are everywhere in Ireland and are all sizes. Just think of the stories you will have to tell everyone back home.

Sushi Kanesaka- I had the privilege to have the authentic sushi experience in Tokyo. The only option was to get the Omakase (chef’s choice). But to get the full experience, I recommend going for it! I had my own sushi chef and was served one piece at a time. It was a set menu of 15 courses. It was the best fish I have ever had, fresh from Tsukiji Market. It is not a budget friendly choice, but one of those things I wanted to do once in my life.
