The Top Destinations to See the Northern Lights

Have you always wanted to see the Northern Lights? If so, you are not alone – many dream of setting their sights on them. When gaseous particles in the Earth’s atmosphere collide with charged particles released from the sun’s atmosphere, individuals get to experience the beauty of the Northern Lights. The bright dancing lights can be found in the Aurora Zone, and the best time to see them is during dark, cold nights with clear skies.

Be warned: due to the unpredictability of the Aurora, it’s never guaranteed that you will get the chance to witness them. But if it’s on your bucket list, here are some of the best places you can visit to be able to view the Northern Lights in 2020.

Reykjavik, Iceland

Loved by many travellers, Iceland’s capital is a firm favourite. Here, you will fall in love with the vibrant art and music scene, culture and lively nightlife. When it comes to seeing the Northern Lights, you can even choose to witness the show in isolation. If that sounds like something you’d like, you can travel to Hofdabrekka in southern Iceland for an uninterrupted viewing experience.

Yukon, Canada

The Yukon has it all: endless hiking trails, rivers that run for miles and a huge number of snow activities to get stuck into. But of course, it’s also home to the beautiful light show. From mid-August to mid-April, individuals can make their way here and get ready to catch the spectacular sight as the sky explodes with colour. 

Tromso, Norway

Tromso in Norway is also highly regarded and therefore on this list. Its mild, stable weather means that it’s one of the greatest places to catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights. I’d recommend embarking on your journey between October and March to increase your chances – and try to stay for at least 3-4 nights. 

Rovaniemi, Finnish Lapland

Wild activities and fairy tales come together in Rovaniemi. Not only can you meet Santa Claus and experience the midnight sun, you can also revel in the magic of the Aurora Borealis. Visible on approximately 150 nights a year, you won’t have to walk far from the city centre to find a good spot to see the Northern Lights. Head to the Arctic Garden or the top of the Ounasvaara fell for the best chance to see them.
