6 Tips for Flying With Your Dog

I, like many other people out there, get extremely anxious just before a flight, even more so when my dog is travelling with me. However, did you know that flying also causes most animals to stress out? If you’re planning to take a trip with your furry friend, then here are a few great tips to help calm your stressed-out dog before and during a flight.

Zaxby loves to travel too!

Avoid a crowded flight

I always try to book a flight out of peak hours when flying with my dog. Fewer people take these flights, which helps a lot to ease the stress that flying does to my pet. If there is absolutely no way for you to book our of peak hours, then make a point of checking in as late as you can, to reduce the time that your dog has to experience a crowded, noisy airport.

Don’t buy a new pet carrier especially for the flight

If you buy a new pet carrier a couple of days before your flight, it is unfamiliar, and you can be sure that your dog will get freaked out when he’s placed inside it for the long flight.

Instead, buy an approved pet carrier (Pet Carrier Verdict has some great buying guides), and let your pet sit in it, play in it and even sleep in it. Your dog will be quite happy to sleep in the familiar crate when the time comes to board the plane.

Give your dog time to get used to the noise of the planes

Although there’s not much noise inside the plane, it might be a good idea to get your dog used to the sounds of planes landing and taking off. It will be a bit strange to hang around an airport with your dog to get him used to the sounds, so rather make a recording of the planes at the airport and play them back to your dog from time-to-time.

Make your dog comfy with a shirt or blanket

If your pet has a blanket of his own that will fit into the carrier, then place it inside without washing it! His own scent will remind him of the comforts of home and will reduce any stress significantly. An unwashed t-shirt of yours is another option – either on its own or in addition to his blanket. Having your scent around him all the time while he’s in the crate will have a calming effect against the sights and sounds of the busy airport.

Consider aromatherapy

The well-known dog whisperer, Cesar Milan, suggests aromatherapy to help soothe anxious pets when they have to travel by air. Lavender oil is an aromatherapy oil known to have incredibly calming qualities. Apart from its anti-stress properties, it can help a lot too, to promote sleep.

Remember his favorite toy!

Besides his blanket, or a t-shirt of yours to keep him peaceful during the flight, make sure to include a favourite toy as well, to keep him occupied when he’s awake. Instead of a squeaky toy, give him a chew toy that won’t take up too much of his space in the carrier. If he doesn’t have a special toy, buy one ahead of time and let him play with it as much as possible before your trip, so that he associates his new toy with the happy times he experiences at home.
