While most of us don’t envy construction workers who undergo physical labor all day long, sitting at a computer all day can get old too. Even if you work from home, staring at your computer screen for hours on end every day can lead to exhaustion and low productivity.
The question is, how can you increase productivity at these types of jobs? What can you do to make yourself more efficient? How can you fight off fatigue and stay alert?
How to Increase Productivity While Sitting At A Computer All Day
Whether you work from home, have your own company, or work in a cubicle for some other company, you know how tedious life can feel sitting at a computer all day. We’re here to help. Check out some of our top tips for increasing productivity, staying alert, and maintaining focus.
- Take A 10-Minute Break Every Hour
We recommend taking a five to 10-minute break every hour to maintain a maximum level of focus while sitting at a computer. Get up, walk around, go to the bathroom, get a light snack or water, etc.
However, you should also stay mindful for the 50 minutes or so while you’re sitting. Follow the 20-20-20 rule to keep your eyes healthy. Every 20 minutes or so, take your eyes off your computer and let them focus on something 20 or more feet away for about 20 seconds.
You should also maintain a good posture, stretch in your chair, and reposition regularly.
- Set Up A Split-Screen
For a higher level of productivity on your tasks on the computer, you should consider setting up a split-screen solution. This will allow you to have multiple windows or programs open simultaneously. This can save an extraordinary amount of time, rather than switching back and forth from one window or program to another.

- Track Your Time
While sitting at a computer and getting engrossed in a project or task, it’s easy to lose track of time. This can be both good and bad.
On the one hand, it helps the day pass quickly and the hours simply fall away before you get to go home. On the other hand, however, it could get you side-tracked from other projects, you could forget to get up and move around, or you could miss your deadline by getting too focused on the details of a project.
We recommend tracking your time and even setting a timer for breaks, certain tasks, and projects for the day.
- Write Down Daily Goals Or To-Do Lists
One of the best ways to maximize efficiency and stay focused is by writing down and following a daily to-do list. Start your week out by setting goals for your work-week. Then, break it down into daily to-do lists.
Keep your to-do list in front of you. If it’s a digital list, make sure you keep the window open on the computer and refer back to it periodically throughout the day to stay reminded of your top priorities.
- Create A Schedule
Making a to-do list by itself isn’t quite enough to increase productivity while sitting at a computer all day. You also need to make a plan. How are you going to accomplish those goals you wrote down?
We recommend creating an organized schedule with specific timeframes for each task on your to-do list. If you’re unsure of how much time each task will take, make your best estimate but allow room for changes in the schedule. This is why your to-do list should also be prioritized.
- Turn Off Notifications
One of the biggest distractions for workers, primarily those working at a computer, are all the random notifications our devices ping in. While convenient little reminders, those notifications can also be incredibly distracting.
Do yourself a favor and turn off all notifications that may tempt you away from the tasks at hand throughout the day. This includes putting your phone on silent or implementing enough discipline to ignore notifications.
- Don’t Succumb To Distracting Websites
Depending on your work environment, you may have access to time-wasting or distracting sites like Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, etc. These sites, while fantastic for socializing and getting updates about things in the news, are also incredibly distracting.
If your company is lax about putting up site-blockers or enforcing work ethic, don’t allow yourself to succumb to these tempting sites. People spend several hours a day on social media because it’s entertaining and informative. However, work is not the right place for it.
- Use At Least One of Your Breaks To Be Active
We suggested earlier that you should be taking a five to 10-minute break every hour or so. However, it’s important to note that at least one of these breaks should be used for getting active. You may also choose to use part of your lunch break.
Walk around the block, do some jumping jacks or pushups, etc. This small burst of activity can improve creativity and productivity, especially if you’re sitting at a computer all day.
- Avoid Drowsiness
While avoiding drowsiness may sound impossible if you work at a computer all day, there are steps you can take to avoid extreme fatigue.
First, make sure you’re getting plenty of sleep at home. While it may seem more appealing to stay up and watch a few extra episodes of your favorite show, you need at least seven hours of sleep a night.
During the workday, be sure to drink plenty of water and eat nutritious meals. Lunches high in fat or grease can lead to mid-day drowsiness that’s hard to overcome. Feel free to indulge in caffeinated beverages like coffee, but beware that sugary drinks can make the problem worse and may add inches to your waistline over time.
