The Best Free Things to Do in NYC

New York, New York – so good they named it twice! A trip to NYC should be on everyone’s bucket list, but it’s certainly not a cheap option, and if you were to be hit with an unexpected expense (such as tripping over on a sidewalk, and needing to contact a PI lawyer in Manhattan), you’re going to want some free things to do that are just as enjoyable.

Central Park

Central Park is a must-visit, whatever the weather as there is always so much to see and do all year round. Enjoy a stroll around the park and spot various plants, animals, and statues, or, in winter, grab your sled and ride down the slopes. There are regular free concerts, events, installations, and shows on in the park, and if you bring a picnic, you can spend a whole day soaking up the atmosphere without spending a penny!

New York Public Library

The New York Public Library is the 3rd largest public library in the world, and if you visit the Main Branch in Manhattan, there are so many different spaces to explore, especially if you are a bit of a bibliophile. There are several beautiful reading rooms, and some amazing things to see in the children’s room. If you are a movie fan, you might want to see where some of your favourites were filmed, including Sex and the City: The Movie; The Day After Tomorrow; Spider-Man and Ghostbusters.

The High Line

The High Line is one of the most unique public parks that you are likely to find, in that it was originally an elevated rail line, high above the city, but now is a glorious walkway with art installations, food, and drink vendors, performances, and seating. It’s free to talk a walk along the High Line, and there is something different happening every day.

Brooklyn Brewery Tour

If you’re a fan of the iconic Brooklyn beer, you’re not going to want to miss the free tours that run on a weekend, every half an hour between 1 pm – 6 pm. You might have to queue a while, but it’s certainly worth it to check out the taproom and see how this delicious beverage is made.

See the Statue of Liberty from the Staten Island Ferry

If you don’t want to fork out to actually go inside the Statue of Liberty, you can still see it pretty close for free on the Staten Island Ferry. This free ferry trip gives you stunning views of the island of Manhattan from the water, as well as seeing Lady Liberty on your way.

Head to the beach

A day at the beach might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of the Big Apple, but if you head to Coney Island you can enjoy the sand and water, playgrounds, and check out the famous amusement park too!
So, although there is plenty to spend your money on with a trip to NYC, there are some great free options
too.
