Are you considering traveling to New York City? However, you are concerned about the rising costs that have occurred over the last decade or so. Therefore, what is the solution to reducing the costs of travel to NYC?
The NYC affordability index shows how the share of income remaining after taxes and necessary expenses between 2005 and 2017 has dropped from 24% to 15%. These figures are for a single working adult. The average monthly expenses chart shows that, in 2017, taxes made up 31.3% of the single adult’s wage, while housing and utilities cost 43.3% of the adult’s salary. The costs for a 4-member family are exponentially higher, if not more because the two children do not earn an income.
While these statistics demonstrate the increase in living expenses over time, it is reasonable to assume that the costs of a vacation or business trip to NYC have also increased. Therefore, the question that begs, is how do you spend time in New York without spending a lot of money, or more than you can comfortably afford at any rate?
By way of answering this question, let’s consider the following points:
- Hotel accommodation
The first step is to find a reasonably priced hotel. Some good choices include the Condor Hotel at $129 per night for a Plush Twin Room to $229 per night for a luxury suite.
Note: These prices do not include taxes and can drop by applying proffered specials and discounts.
The Condor is located in the historic Williamsburg district of Brooklyn. Therefore, should you wish to explore this area, this hotel is a wise choice.
Another excellent accommodation choice is the 2N 689 hotel in Manhattan. It is situated in central NYC, close to Times Square and the Radio City Music Hall. Other attractions nearby include Madison Square Garden, Central Park, Grand Central Station, the Statue of Liberty, and the Empire State Building.
A studio room or apartment, sleeping two adults and including a private bathroom, kitchenette, and free WIFI, costs about $178 per night.
A final option is the Arlo SoHo hotel situated in SoHo, New York, close to the One World Trade Center and Battery Park, where the ferries leave for Liberty and Ellis Islands. The most affordable room is the Twin Bunk Room with two bunk beds, and a city view costs $21 per night. A Queen Room with a double bed and access to a private terrace costs $259 per night. Finally, on the other end of the scale, a Twin Room with Two Beds and a Terrace costs $319 per night.
- Use the train to and from the airport
As with most airports, both JKF and La Guardia are situated far from the city. Therefore, a taxi or Uber cost will more than likely cost between $40 and $65 for a single trip. A cheap transport option from the airport to your hotel is to take a shuttle from the airport to the train, and then train to your hotel. The most cost-effective option is to buy a 7-day metro pass, which allows your unlimited use of the bus and metro (train) for seven days.
If your NYC visit is longer than seven days but less than 30 days, you can always purchase a second metro pass. If you are planning an extended stay in New York, a 30-day metro pass is the most cost-effective form of transportation. As with the 7-day pass, you are allowed unlimited use of the bus and the metro.
- Purchase a NYC CityPASS
An NYC CityPASS costs $132 per adult and allows you entry into the following six attractions: The Empire State Building, the American Museum of Natural History, the 9/11 Memorial and Museum or the Intrepid Sea, Air, and Space Museum, the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Guggenheim Museum or the Top of the Rock Observation Deck.
If you plan to visit all six attractions during your stay, this ticket will save about 41% on the individual cost of all six attractions. If this price is above your budget, or you only have time to visit three major attractions, then the New York C3 pass is an option. It costs $83 per adult and allows you entry into any three attractions that are part of the NYC CityPASS ticket.
Final thoughts
These are just a few of the many ways you can reduce the cost of your stay in New York City and still have a great time. Some of the other options include choosing the time of your visit to coincide with the off-season and finding free things to do, like walking across the Brooklyn Bridge and picnicking in Central Park.
