8 Things to See and Do in Ljubljana, Slovenia

Slovenia has grown in popularity over the last few years for travelers looking to get a look at another side of Europe. As fantastic as places like France, Spain, and Italy are, Europe’s a big continent full of amazing destinations.

If you’re looking for a place that’s less crowded, a little less expensive, full of culture and delicious food, and more, you should head to Ljubljana, Slovenia. Here are some of the top things you must do and see when you travel there.

1. Prešeren Square

Prešeren Square is the perfect place to begin your Ljubljana adventure and use an anchor for all your activities. Prešeren Square is where the city comes together. If there’s a big event, it’s likely going to be happening here.

It’s not only beautiful but has a historical legacy that dates back hundreds of years. The name comes from the 19th-century poet France Prešeren whose poem “A Toast” became the Slovenian National Anthem.

2. Ljubljana Castle

Who doesn’t love a good castle? Take the tourist train (or have a little hike) up to the 900-year-old castle that traces its heritage back to the days as a defense against an Ottoman invasion.

You can enter the main courtyard for free and even enjoy an evening partying at the nightclub inside one of its wings. There are also galleries and exciting tours that feature 3D animations and guides in period costumes.

3. The Skyscraper

Nebotičnik, or The Skyscraper, as it’s referred to in English, was the tallest building in the Balkans when they finished its construction in 1993. It was one of the most modern buildings in the world, equipped with AC, fast elevators, and central heating.

Today, there may be more modern buildings in the city, but nowhere else can you get the complete view of the town and the surrounding castles and mountains.

There’s no better place to kick back than the cafe where you can read a book or read up on everything else you should do in Ljubljana. If you plan on using the cafe WiFi (since cell service isn’t great), make sure you use a VPN to keep your data safe from fraudsters.

4. Dive Into Culinary Wonders

It is easier to create a list of places where you shouldn’t eat in Ljubljana than recording all the amazing spots you should check. The town is a foodie’s paradise.

Oce place you can’t miss is JB. Long the region’s culinary capital, JB has food that will be beyond delight. Famous chef Janez Bratovž has even served meals to the pope. For such an exquisite place, the prices are actually reasonable. The six-course menu starts at €60, and the 12-course tasting menu is €95. Yum!

5. Metelkova Mesto

Metelkova Mesto is one of those genuinely Slovenian places. Formerly an army barracks dated back to the Austro-Hungarian Empire, this large space was occupied by squatters to prevent it from being demolished.

Like the Freetown Christiania, this region has become an urban enclave for artists, replete with bars, clubs, and outdoor concerts during the summer.

6. TOZD

TOZD is a favorite for travelers and locals alike. This hip cafe is right on the river and is not only one of the best places to take in the city’s sights but is a destination in its own right. The coffee and food here are excellent, and in the evening, it turns into a full bar with occasional live music. If you want a place where the vibe is just perfect, then this is it.

7. Republic Square

Republic Square is the birthplace of modern Slovenian history. Dating to the Communist era, you won’t find the luxurious architecture of other parts of the city. It was intended to be the modern city center. Here you’ll see Slovenia Parliament, TR3, and Ljubljanska Banka office buildings.

While not the prettiest place in the city, it has real meaning. The independence of Slovenia was declared here in 1991. And if you come in winter, you’ll be able to watch hockey matches as well.

8. Museum of Illusions

Located in a townhouse on Congress Square (also a gorgeous place to see) is the offbeat House of Illusions. It is equal parts unusual and delightful. You’ll move from room to room, exploring strange sights, including the Anti-Gravity Room, where everything is seemingly floating.  Enjoy a light-hearted and fun twist here as you dig into the city’s culture.

Ljubljana is a city with endless delights. This list is only the beginning of amazing things you can do there. So, the only advice left is that you should give yourself plenty of time to enjoy the city. You never know what unexpected and joyful pleasure will turn up here.
